Places to eat

In and around Caister

The Never Turn Back is small but does the nicest Sunday roast probably in Caister at a very reasonable price - you have to phone at least the day before to book a table as the pub is quite small and popular. It's named in homage to the informal motto of the brave Caister lifeboatmen...

The Castle in Caister is a short walk away and very busy on a Sunday (staff take your mobile to call when a table is free at busy times, but the wait can be an hour plus). It has a great play area for kids, you can pay extra for the indoor soft play.

A bit further away but still walkable (25min walk, through the village or along the beach and up), The Centurion Pub on Ormesby Road (turn right at Lidl junction) also has a nice outdoor play area and a reasonable Sunday carvery.

You'll hear us rave about the nearby pretty village of Winterton-on-Sea and its quieter unspoilt beach, there's one pub -the Fisherman's Return (15min drive).

Not much further on from Winterton, The Nelson Head in Horsey is definitely more in the realm of gastro-pub pricing (£12-16 for mains) but does offer the benefit of free parking for customers, so you can wander down the road for seal-watching (c15-20min stroll to beach).

The Castle Carvery (5min walk from cottage) has a good play area for kids, the food is OK but can have long queues for the carvery at peak times, so we tend to prefer others.

Takeaway
Indian - Spicy Papadum in Tan Lane (turn right)
Chinese - Turn right for Tasty House (5 min) and Dragon Place (10 min)
Pizza and kebab places are also available on the High Street (turn right)

Fish & Chips (often cash only)
Ryan's Traditional Fish & Chips - Tan Lane (turn right) - more choice, but more expensive
Brilliant Fish & Chips - High St (turn right)
Superfry - Beach Road (turn right)
Most delivery places in Great Yarmouth are likely to deliver Gt Yarmouth too.

A little further afield:

The Waterside, Ormesby is a 5-10min drive and a nice location on a broad with a small play area/child's assault course for them to try. We've popped in for a drink before, but you can eat there, hire a boat here, or try the small putting green.

The Boathouse, Rollesby is the Waterside's sister site. They do food too and it's a lovely place to eat outside right on the Broad, with a nice play area too.

The Brewer's Fayre pub (the "Broadland View") on the road to Norwich (just off the A47) has a large soft play area about 30min from Caister.

Burgh Hall near Burgh Castle does a good value carvery and also has an indoor soft play (£2/free if eating). There's an outdoor swimming pool too (£5/person or £15/family for whole day).

The Ferry Inn is a picturesque 30 min drive through pretty Horning. It's right on the river too.
